Debian packages missing .a files?

I tried installing libsquirrel-dev through apt. I got .h and .so files, but no .a files, and I need those to link against. I normally get them by running make in the source download from GitHub, but I was hoping to be able to do it faster on new installs by getting them off the repo. Was this intentional?
